Adjective

  • (Britain dialectal) Careless.
  • Strange, and mysteriously unsettling (as if supernatural); weird.

    "He bore an uncanny resemblance to the dead sailor."

  • (psychology, psychoanalysis, Freud) Simultaneously familiar and foreign, often uncomfortably so; translation of Freud's usage of the German "unheimlich" (literally "unsecret").
