👉 A sacred oral tradition of the Paiute Indians states that the hoodoos are ancient legend people turned into stone by coyote as a punishment for bad deeds. It is the custom of the Paiutes to tell these stories only during the winter season.
👉 Hoodoos of Bryce CanyonBryce Canyon is famous for these beautifully colored structures. There are a few hoodoos, however, that stand out thanks to their unique sizes, shapes, and locations. Perhaps the most popular hoodoo in Bryce Canyon, Thor's Hammer is truly a sight to see.
👉 Paiute lore reveals the belief that the enigmatic red rock hoodoos that distinguish Bryce Canyon were “Evil Legend People” (To-when-an-ung-wa) who were turned to stone by the all-powerful Coyote spirit. The Paiute called these mysterious rock formations Anka-ku-was-a-wits, meaning the “red painted faces.”
👉 Hoodoo rocks are often fantastically shaped, naturally carved rocks or earth pedestals, pillars or columns. The word hoodoo probably derives from voodoo, a West African-based religion in which magical powers can be associated with natural features. Hoodoos conjure up images of strange events.
👉 Bryce built a road to the plateau top to retrieve firewood and timber. He also built an irrigation canal to raise crops and animals. Local people called the canyon with the strange rock formations near Ebenezer's home "Bryce's Canyon". The Bryces moved to Arizona in 1880, the name remained.
👉 These hoodoos can maintain a unique mushroom-like appearance as the underlying base erodes at a faster rate compared to the capstones at a rate of nearly one centimeter per year, faster than most geologic structures.
